Essential Table Top RPG Tools for Beginners

If you’re new to the world of Table Top Role Playing Games (RPGs), you’ll quickly realise that they can be complex, immersive, and a whole lot of fun. But they can also be a little overwhelming for beginners. That’s why we’ve put together a list of essential table top RPG tools to help get you started on your gaming journey.

Game Dice

In most RPGs, the roll of a dice decides the outcome of your actions. A set of game dice typically includes a D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, and sometimes a percentile dice. These can be bought online or from your local tabletop gaming store. Alternatively, you can use a digital dice roller app.

Player’s Handbook

The Player’s Handbook is the essential guide for every RPG player. It provides the information necessary for creating and developing your character, as well as a basic overview of game rules. Make sure to get a physical copy or PDF version of the handbook related to the specific RPG you’re playing (e.g., Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder).

Character Sheet

A Character Sheet is a profile that documents your character’s background, abilities, inventory, and more. Most games will provide a default sheet. As a beginner, it’s best to start with a pre-generated character sheet before trying to customize your own.

Pencil and Erasers

This goes without saying, but you’ll need plenty of these! RPGs often require quick changes and updates to your character sheet, so having a pencil and eraser handy is essential.

Character Creation 101

Creating a character is one of the most important aspects of any table top RPG. A well-made character can enhance your gaming experience, making the game more engaging, and offering countless opportunities for role play.

Step 1: Choose a Character Concept and Class

Start with the concept: what kind of character do you want to play? Do you want to be a fierce warrior? A cunning rogue? Or a knowledgeable wizard? Once you’ve chosen a concept, pick a class that fits your idea.

Step 2: Determine Abilities

Each RPG game has different ways to determine character attributes. Usually, they include strength, wisdom, charisma, intelligence, dexterity, and constitution. Origins, class, and species can dictate some base stats, and players traditionally roll dice to determine their remaining attributes.

Step 3: Choose Race

Most RPGs offer a variety of species or races for you to choose from when creating your character. The race you choose can impact your character’s abilities, skills, and appearance. Balance the race’s strengths with your class for a well-rounded character.

Step 4: Flesh Out Your Character’s Backstory

The backstory is not only crucial for giving depth to your character, but it’s also pivotal for the game’s narrative. Who is your character? What’s their history? Their motivations? This can help you role-play more effectively.

Constants in the cosmos: Change and Fluidity. Think of your character as a living being. They should grow, change, learn, and make decisions based on their evolving values and beliefs.

Remember, table top RPGs are about having fun and telling a collective story. Don’t stress out about creating the perfect character or being an expert from the start. This is a journey, and every hero starts somewhere. Enjoy the ride, and game on!
